Friday-Saturday, October 20-21 Lecture and seminar on the Jung-Pauli Relationship

C. G. Jung Center for Studies in Analytical Psychology, in Brunswick, ME. The lecture and seminar will explore the relationship between C. G. Jung and Wolfgang Pauli starting from the moment they met in 1931 when Pauli sought help for acute depression.  Only four years later, in 1935, Jung gave a major presentation on “Dream Symbols of the Individuation Process,” at the Eranos conference in Ascona which was based on Pauli’s dreams.  The next year he came to Bailey Island to give an extended consecutive seminar on the same topic during five days in September in front of an audience of around 100 largely American analysts and analysands.  He was invited by Esther Harding, Eleanor Bertine, and Kristine Mann, three women analysts that also, in the same year, founded the first Jungian organization in the United States, the Analytical Psychology Club.  In the following year, Jung continued this seminar during three days in October while visiting New York City.                 In the lecture on Friday, Suzanne. Gieser will provide an overall picture of the Jung-Pauli relationship, and the circumstances surrounding the seminar at Bailey Island.  On the seminar on Saturday, she will focus on the dream material presented at Bailey Island, including some of the factors motivating Jung’s choices of which dreams to use.  What is noteworthy, for instance, is that Jung’s integration of alchemical symbolism to the dream material grew over time.  In the Eranos lecture alchemy is mentioned only as a footnote to the dream material, but already at Bailey Island, Jung expands his interpretations to include more and more references to alchemy.  As we know the material was finally reworked and published under the title Psychology and Alchemy (CW 12) in 1944.  The ideas of alchemy later became to Pauli an important forerunner and key to his own modern trial to find a common ground or meeting point between physics and psychology (or matter and mind).
